Combining art history, analytical inquiry, and journalistic investigation, Lehrer-Graiwer examines not only Lozano’s act of dropping out but also the evolution over time of Dropout Piece in the context of the artist’s practice in New York and
by Martin Herbert “Seek the extremes, that’s where all the action is,” Lee Lozano reminded herself midway through the handwritten note that memorializes her self-instruction work Grass Piece (1969), in which she got stoned for thirty-three days straight.
Her ultimate action was Dropout Piece, a systematic and sustained extraction from what her biographer, Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer, describes as the “egocentric competition and self-promotion” of the art world. Virtually a recluse for nearly 30 years, she died in Dallas in 1999, at the age of 68.
Throughout history, many great artists have opted out, taken significant breaks, or withdrawn from the art world altogether—whether in search of a mind-clearing reprieve from commercial and social stresses, as with Agnes Martin, or as the final act of a practice animated by institutional critique, like Lee Lozano.
